Experience guided horseback trail rides at Elk Point Lodge on Lake Vallecito with LSM Outdoors, offering both one and two-hour options in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. These beginner-friendly rides follow scenic lakeside trails and continue through pine forests and open terrain, providing a relaxed, authentic way to explore the area on horseback with experienced local guides.
Explore the upper Piedra River country on a guided two- or four-hour trail ride with LSM Outdoors, departing from our Piedra River Outpost. These rides follow mountain trails through the San Juan National Forest, with views of Chimney Rock, pine-covered hillsides, and open meadows along the way.
The two-hour ride is beginner-friendly and offers a great introduction to horseback riding in the mountains. The four-hour ride is better suited for riders comfortable spending more time in the saddle, taking you deeper into the backcountry along the Piedra River through thicker timber and wider valleys until you reach the water itself. Both options offer an authentic way to experience this part of southwest Colorado on horseback with experienced local guides.
Riders must be at least 8 years old to participate.

Ride horseback through the vast Weminuche Wilderness to our high-country base camp, perched at 10,000 feet in the Pine River Valley and shaded by the granite walls of the Continental Divide. Just beneath Granite Lake, with sweeping views toward the Rio Grande Pyramid and the Spanish Window, this camp offers one of the most breathtaking settings in the San Juans.
Each morning starts with a hearty, home-cooked breakfast before you saddle up for the day. Ride sections of the Continental Divide Trail with an experienced guide, cast a fly into the cold alpine waters of The Pine River, or simply rest back at camp and take in the quiet, wide-open beauty of the high country. Evenings bring good food, good company, and the kind of stillness you can only find miles from the nearest road.
It’s a true Western pack trip—traditional, scenic, and rooted in the way mountain travel is meant to be experienced: on horseback, far from the crowds, deep in wild country.
Returning to the Trailhead
When your trip comes to an end, we pack up camp, load the stock, and ride back out the way we came. The return trip offers a final chance to soak in the mountains before we head back to the ranch.
Days in the High Country
From camp, you can ride sections of the Continental Divide Trail, explore nearby basins, fly fish alpine waters, or simply relax and take in the views. We offer short rides, full-day excursions, and plenty of downtime to enjoy the wilderness at your own pace.
Camp includes a cook/dining tent, guide tents, guest tents, and a central gathering area. Your home for the next few days is fully outfitted with everything you need to be comfortable in the backcountry. Hot meals, good company, and a warm campfire cap off each day.
Camp Life & Facilities
Arrival at High-Country Camp
We typically arrive in camp by late afternoon. You’ll get settled into your wall tent, stretch your legs, and take in the surrounding peaks before dinner. The quiet up here is something special — it’s the kind of stillness you can only find miles from the nearest road.
The ride into camp takes several hours as we climb through timber, cross streams, and travel deeper into the San Juan Mountains. We stop for lunch and give you time to take in the scenery, stretch your legs, and enjoy the rhythm of riding in true backcountry.
Riding Into the Weminuche Wilderness
Preparing for the Trip & Heading Out
Your adventure begins at our ranch in Southwest Colorado, where your gear is packed, weighed, and balanced for the ride into the high country. Before arrival, we’ll send detailed information on what to pack, weight limits, and how to prepare. After meeting your guides and horses, we travel to the trailhead, adjust saddles and stirrups, secure gear, and make final preparations before riding into the wilderness.
